About Vanilla

Vanilla is a spice derived from orchids of the genus Vanilla, primarily obtained from pods of the flat-leaved vanilla (Vanilla planifolia).

It takes three to five years after it’s planted before it starts to produce vanilla pods. Each vanilla plant produces several orchids that bloom at different times throughout the growing season and only stay in bloom for one day. Growing vanilla is incredibly labor-intensive, as each orchids are handpollinated. The flavor of vanilla is typically produced after a 3-6 month long curing process. This, and the practice of manual pollination, makes vanilla one of the most expensive spices

Flavor Characteristics

Planifolia vanilla beans are creamy and extremely bold in flavor with an aroma reminiscent of figs, milk chocolate, and raisins. They produce a higher-than-average vanillin content which makes them perfect for desserts such as chocolate truffles or ice creams
